तत्पूर्वी, प्रथम फलंदाजी करणाऱ्या ऑस्ट्रेलियाची सुरुवात अत्यंत वादळी झाली होती. सलामीवीर ट्रेव्हिस हेड (५६) आणि कर्णधार मिचेल मार्श (५४) यांनी केवळ ५१ चेंडूत १०४ धावांची सलामी दिली होती. एका वेळी ऑस्ट्रेलिया २०० धावांचा टप्पा ओलांडेल असे वाटत होते. मात्र, १०४ धावांवर पहिली विकेट पडताच त्यांचा डाव पत्त्याच्या बंगल्यासारखा कोसळला. श्रीलंकेच्या दुशान हेमंताने भेदक मारा करत २७ धावांत ३ विकेट्स घेतले आणि ऑस्ट्रेलियाला २० षटकांत ७ बाद १८१ धावांवर रोखले. मॅक्सवेल आणि इंग्लिस यांनी मधल्या फळीत प्रयत्न केले खरे, पण त्यांना मोठी धावसंख्या उभारता आली नाही.
