\n१० ऑक्टोबर १९५४ रोजी जन्मलेल्या रेखा यांचे पूर्ण नाव भानुरेखा गणेशन. तमिलचे प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता जेमिनी गणेशन यांच्या त्या कन्या होत्या. परंतु, रेखा यांच्या आईशी लग्न न झाल्याने त्यांनी आपले नाव रेखाला दिले नाही. रेखा यांना अभिनय क्षेत्रात रुची नव्हती. परंतु, घरच्या आर्थिक परिस्थितीमुळे त्यांनी सिनेसृष्टीत पाऊल ठेवले. १९६६ रोजी बालकलाकार म्हणून तेलगू ‘रंगूला रत्नम’ चित्रपटामध्ये त्यांनी अभिनय केला. यानंतर चार वर्षांनी रेखा यांनी ‘सावन भादा’ चित्रपटातून बॉलिवूडमध्ये एंट्री केली.

\nहा चित्रपट बॉक्स ऑफिसवर चांगलाच गाजला. यानंतर त्यांनी रामपूर का लक्ष्मण, कहाणी किस्मत की, प्राण जाये पर वाचन न जाये यासारख्या चित्रपटात काम केले. अमिताभ बच्चन सोबत दो अंजाने चित्रपटही प्रसिद्ध झाला. परंतु, ‘घर’या चित्रपटाने रेखांच्या अभिनय करियरला कलाटणी मिळाली. आणि त्या प्रसिद्धीच्या शिखरावर जाऊन पोहचल्या. १९८१ मध्ये ‘उमराव जान’ चित्रपटासाठी रेखा यांना राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कारही मिळाला.

I did not learn the Urdu language or anything of that sort. Umrao Jaan was okay. I do not think I deserved a National Award for it. The best part of the film was its mahol (atmosphere) and because of which it happened the way it did, and in those days I was going through a certain phase in my life, such that it came on my face too. To add to that, Muzzafar Ali was a fabulous painter and because of the textures of the clothes, the background, all were in complete detail it is because of this detailing that the film became such a success – REKHA #rekha #rekhaji

धर्मा, कहानी किस्मत की, नमक हराम, धर्मात्मा, खून पसीना, गंगा की सौगंध, मुकद्दर का सिकंदर, खूबसूरत, अगर तुम ना होते, खून भरी मांग, इजाजत, बीवी हो तो ऐसी, भ्रष्टाचार, फूल बने अंगारे, खिलाडि़यों का खिलाड़ी, आस्था, बुलंदी, जुबैदा, लज्जा, दिल है तुम्हारा, कोई मिल गया और क्रिश यासारखे अनेक चित्रपट चर्चेत राहिले आहेत.

रेखा यांचे चित्रपट जेवढ्या चर्चेत राहिले तेवढेच त्यांचे खासगी आयुष्यही चर्चेत राहिले आहे. विनोद मेहरा, अमिताभ बच्चन, मुकेश अग्रवाल यांचयासोबत रेखाचे अनेक वेळा नाव जोडले गेले.
