दुसऱ्या दिवशी बेझबॉल क्रिकेट खेळणाऱ्या इंग्लंडने सामन्याच्या तिसऱ्या दिवशी भारतीय गोलंदाजांसमोर गुडघे टेकले. दुसऱ्या दिवसअखेर इंग्लंडने आक्रमक फलंदाजी करत 35 षटकांत 2 बाद 207 धावा केल्या होत्या. पण इंग्लंडला तिसऱ्या दिवशी ही लय राखता आली नाही. तिसऱ्या दिवशी इंग्लंडने 8 विकेट गमावल्या, त्यानंतर भारताला 126 धावांची आघाडी मिळाली.

इंग्लंडने कसोटी सामन्यातील दुसऱ्या दिवशी ज्या दमदार पध्दतीने फलंदाजी करत खेळ केला, ते पाहता ते तिसऱ्या दिवशी सहज आघाडी घेतील, असा अंदाज बांधला जात होता, कारण त्याच्या 8 विकेट्स शिल्लक होत्या, मात्र तसे झाले नाही. तिसऱ्या दिवशी भारतीय गोलंदाजांनी आपली पकड घट्ट करत इंग्लिश संघाचा खेळ खराब केला.

भारतीय संघ 445 धावांत सर्वबाद झाल्यानंतर इंग्लंडने पहिल्या डावात फलंदाजीला उतरताना चांगली सुरुवात केली. सलामीला आलेल्या जॅक क्रॉली आणि बेन डकेट यांनी पहिल्या विकेटसाठी 84 धावांची (80 चेंडू) भागीदारी केली. इंग्लिश संघाला पहिला धक्का 14व्या षटकात जॅक क्रॉलीच्या रूपाने बसला, जो 28 चेंडूत 2 चौकारांच्या मदतीने 15 धावा करून पॅव्हेलियनमध्ये परतला. त्यानंतर बेन डकेट आणि ऑली पोप यांनी दुसऱ्या विकेटसाठी 93 धावांची (102 चेंडू) भागीदारी केली. मोहम्मद सिराजचा बळी ठरलेल्या ओली पोपच्या रूपाने इंग्लंडने दुसरी विकेट गमावली. पोपने 55 चेंडूंत 5 चौकार आणि 1 षटकाराच्या मदतीने 39 धावा केल्या. त्यानंतर अनुभवी फलंदाज जो रूटच्या रूपाने इंग्लंडने तिसरी विकेट गमावली. रूट 31 चेंडूत 2 चौकारांच्या मदतीने केवळ 18 धावा करून बाद झाला. रुटच्या विकेटनंतर इंग्लंडला काही विशेष धावा करता आल्या नाहीत.

त्यानंतर कर्णधार बेन स्टोक्स 41 धावा करून पॅव्हेलियनमध्ये परतला. स्टोक्सच्या विकेटनंतर इंग्लंडची धावसंख्या 6 बाद 299 होती. त्यानंतर संपूर्ण संघ 319 धावांवर बाद झाला. इंग्लंडला सातवा धक्का बेन फॉक्सच्या (13) रूपाने, आठवा रेहान अहमदच्या (06) रूपाने, नववा टॉम हार्टलीच्या (09) रूपाने आणि दहावा धक्का जेम्स अँडरसनच्या (01) रूपाने बसला.
