तिसऱ्या क्रमांकावर फलंदाजीला आलेल्या सूर्यकुमार यादवच्या दमदार अर्धशतकी खेळीच्या जोरावर भारतीय संघाने न्यूझीलंडला मात दिली. प्रथम फलंदाजीला आलेल्या न्यूझीलंड संघाने निर्धारित 20 षटकांत 6बाद 164 धावा केल्या. प्रत्युत्तरात भारतीय संघाने 19.4 षटकांत 5 बाद 166 धावा करून विजयाची नोंद केली.

भारतीय संघाकडून सूर्यकुमार यादवने 40 चेडूंत 6 चौकार आणि 3 षटकारासह सर्वाधिक 62 धावा केल्या. तर कर्णधार रोहित शर्माने 36 चेंडूत (5 चौकार, 2 षटकार)  48 धावा केल्या. याव्यतिरिक्त केएल राहुलने 15 तर यष्टीरक्षक फलंदाज पंतने नाबाद 17 धावा केल्या.

न्यूझीलंड संघाकडून गोलंदाजीत ट्रेंट बोल्टने 4 षटकांत 31 धावा देत 2 गडी बाद केले. तर टी साऊदी आणि मिचेल सँटनरने प्रत्येकी 1 गडी बाद केला.

तत्पूर्वी, नाणेफेक हरल्यानंतर प्रथम फलंदाजीस आलेल्या न्यूझीलंडने 20 षटकांमध्ये 6 गडी गमावत 164 धावा केल्या. न्यूझीलंड संघाकडून मार्टिन गप्टीलने (Martin Guptill) 42 चेंडूमध्ये सर्वाधिक 70 धावा तर त्या पाठोपाठ मार्क चॅम्पमन याने (Mark Champman) 50 चेंडूमध्ये 63 धावा केल्या. त्यांनतर न्यूझीलंडच्या एकाही फलंदाजांला चांगली खेळी करता आली नाही. डॅरेल मिशेल आणि ग्लेन फिलिप्स हे फलंदाज शून्यावर बाद झाले.

भारताकडून भुवनेश्वर कुमार (Bhuvnehswar Kumar) आणि आर.अश्विन (R Ashwin) सगळ्यात यशस्वी गोलंदाज ठरले. भुवनेश्वर कुमारने 4 षटकांमध्ये 24 धावा देत  2  बळी घेतले, तर अश्विनने 4 षटकांमध्ये 23 धाव देताना 2 गडी बाद केेले. मोहम्मद सिराज आणि दीपक चहरला एक गडी बाद करण्यात यश आलं.
